Frontonio Microcósmico Garnacha is a fresh, light Garnacha from old vines in Valdejalón, Aragón, made by Master of Wine Fernando Mora. Seven months in concrete keep the red-cherry fruit, floral lift and bright acidity to the fore.
Description
Frontonio Microcósmico Garnacha is made by Bodegas Frontonio in Épila, in the Valdejalón region of Aragón, a project founded in 2008 by Master of Wine Fernando Mora and oenologist Mario López to raise the profile of the area's old Garnacha vineyards. The vines are farmed organically and benefit from a continental Mediterranean climate, with hot days and cool nights at altitude that ripen the fruit while preserving the freshness and aromatic lift of Garnacha. The stony soils drain freely and keep yields low. The wine is aged seven months in concrete, an inert vessel that builds gentle texture through slow oxygen exchange while leaving the fruit and floral character untouched by oak. The result is a precise, vibrant red at a modest 12.5%. The colour is a bright, light red. The nose is fresh and perfumed, with red cherry and berry fruit, a rose-petal floral note, dried herbs and a peppery lift. The palate is light and juicy, with fine tannins, crisp acidity and a clean, savoury finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, with a short chill on a warm day. It works with poultry, pork, mushrooms and lighter dishes.
