Frontonio makes La Cerqueta from old Garnacha vines grown at 630 metres on blue and grey slate in Aragón. Foot-trodden with whole clusters and aged 14 months in foudres, it shows red fruit, garrigue herbs and a savoury, peppery depth.
Description
Frontonio La Cerqueta 2023 is a single-vineyard Garnacha from Bodegas Frontonio in Aragón, Spain, drawn from traditional mountain vineyards sat at 630 metres on blue and grey slate soils. The altitude brings a wide swing between day and night temperatures, slowing ripening so the fruit keeps freshness and aromatic detail, while the slate drains freely and pushes the old vines, some over 75 years, to yield concentrated, low-cropping fruit. On arrival the Garnacha is foot-trodden with 60 percent of the clusters left with their stems, and fermentation runs with indigenous yeasts. The whole-cluster work adds structure, a peppery lift and a savoury, herbal edge, while ageing for 14 months in foudres softens the tannins through slow oxygen exchange without overlaying obvious oak. The wine is medium bodied with a savoury, classic profile. The nose offers red fruit, dried herbs and black pepper over an earthy base. The palate is fresh and structured, with fine tannin, garrigue herbs and a long, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant young bottles. It is well suited to roast lamb and game.
