Description
Fromm Sauvignon Blanc is an organic white made by the Fromm Winery in Marlborough, on New Zealand's South Island. Georg Fromm established the estate in 1992 and built its name on European winemaking methods applied to southern hemisphere fruit. The grapes come from organic vineyards farmed without pesticides or synthetic chemicals. Marlborough's cool maritime climate and free-draining stony river soils give a long, even ripening season and a wide diurnal range, which locks in the high acidity and the pungent, herbal thiol aromatics that made the region's Sauvignon famous. After a cool fermentation that protects those aromatics, the wine is aged on its fine lees, which rounds the mid-palate and adds a subtle texture beyond the leaner commercial norm. The colour is pale lemon with green tints. The nose is fresh and lifted, with lemon, green apple and elderflower over white peach and a grassy, herbal edge. The palate is dry and crisp, the citrus and orchard fruit carried by a firm line of acidity and a saline, stony finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
