Description
Friesengeist Original Spezial-Getraenk is a herbal liqueur from northern Germany, made by Waldemar Behn and bottled at a strong 56% in a one litre format. It is produced to a secret recipe in the traditional macerated style, blending herbs, spices and a slight sweetness into a liqueur with a firm character. The high strength and the closely held recipe are its signature, a regional classic rather than a national brand.
The nose is spicy and herbal with a subtle sweetness and a hint of citrus, the palate intense and full bodied with herbs, light spice and a pleasant sweetness, finishing long and warming with a fine herbal note. Friesengeist is traditionally served flambeed, the flame drawing out its aromatics, which makes it a talking point as well as a digestif after a rich meal. Behind the bar its strength and herbal depth let it add bittersweet backbone and spice to a drink, and a dash carries well in a stirred winter serve. Serve it neat, flambeed in the traditional way, or well chilled.
