Domènech Vidal, part of the Vallformosa group, blend Parellada and Muscat for this Penedès white. The Muscat brings a floral, lychee lift and the Parellada freshness, giving a low alcohol wine of white flowers, exotic fruit and citrus.
Description
Domènech Vidal, part of the Vallformosa group in the D.O. Penedès, make Freyé as a blend of Parellada and Muscat. The Domènech family have five generations of winemaking in Penedès. The Muscat vines sit at 380 metres and the Parellada between 320 and 640 metres, altitudes that keep the nights cool and preserve aromatics and acidity, which matters for the perfumed Muscat and the delicate Parellada. The Muscat is picked at the end of August and the Parellada from late September into October. Muscat is the aromatic heart of the blend, its grapey, floral character built into the wine, while Parellada, the light and fresh variety of the higher Penedès, lends the crisp backbone. At 11.5 percent this is a low alcohol style, made fresh to hold the fruit. The colour is a pale yellow, and the nose is openly floral, with white flowers and rose leading to lychee and pineapple. The palate is light, off dry in feel yet clean, the fruit and a touch of ginger spice cut by citrus. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees, as an aperitif or with lighter dishes.
