Francesco Marra makes this Negroamaro rosé in Salento, Puglia, farmed organically and aged ten months in clay amphorae. Pale and savoury, it shows red berry, citrus peel and a herbal, saline freshness.
Description
Francesco Marra works in the Salento peninsula of Puglia, in Italy's deep south, farming organically and using pheromone sexual confusion in place of insecticides for moth control. This rosé is pure Negroamaro, the dark-skinned local grape whose name points to its bitter, savoury edge. The Salento climate is hot and dry, moderated by sea breezes from two coasts, and the soils are red clay over limestone. Pressed early to keep the colour pale, the wine is aged for ten months in clay amphorae. The porous clay allows slow, gentle oxygen exchange without adding oak flavour, building texture and a savoury depth while preserving freshness. The result is pale coral in colour. The nose shows red berries and cherry alongside dried Mediterranean herbs and citrus peel, with an earthy, saline undertone. The palate is dry and crisp, light to medium in body, with a faintly bitter, savoury finish that is true to the grape. Serve chilled at around 9 to 11 degrees. It is a natural match for seafood, fresh salads and lighter summer cooking.
