Grandes Pagos Gallegos make this Godello in the D.O. Monterrei, Galicia, from vines over twenty years old on granite slopes. Seven months on the lees give a textured white of white peach, pear and melon with a fresh, steely finish.
Description
Fraga do Corvo is a single-variety Godello made by Grandes Pagos Gallegos in the D.O. Monterrei, an inland Galician region near the Portuguese border. The grapes come from the winery's own vineyards, over twenty years old, planted on slopes of granite soil. That granite bedrock is central to the wine's character, giving Godello a mineral, steely edge and helping retain freshness, while Monterrei's warmer, more continental climate than coastal Galicia ripens the fruit to a rounder stone-fruit profile. The grapes are hand-harvested into small fifteen-kilogram boxes to protect them. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then aged seven months on its fine lees. That extended lees ageing is what gives the wine its body: as the spent yeast breaks down it adds a creamy weight and a subtle savoury, nutty depth, broadening the palate without any oak. The colour is straw-yellow with steely highlights. The nose shows white peach, pear and melon over citrus and a light almond note. The palate is fresh and medium-bodied, the lees texture balanced by clean acidity and a mineral, granite-driven finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees. It suits fish and white meats.
