Description
Dr. Pioth Riesling Seco is a dry Riesling from Forster Winzer, a growers' cooperative in the Pfalz, or Palatinate, one of Germany's warmest and sunniest wine regions. The Pfalz sits in the rain shadow of the Haardt hills, and its mild climate and mixed soils of sandstone, limestone and loam ripen Riesling more fully than the cooler Mosel while keeping the grape's defining acidity. Fruit from the Forst area, known for its warm, mineral-rich vineyards, gives the wine its structure. It is vinified dry and rests four months on its fine lees, a step that releases mannoproteins to build a softer, rounder texture and a light savoury depth without any oak. The wine is pale straw in the glass, with lemon, green apple and white peach on the nose over white flowers and a hint of wet stone. The palate is dry and crisp at a moderate 12 per cent, with a firm citrus line, a gentle creaminess from the lees and a clean mineral finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and alongside fresh fish, shellfish and lighter pork and poultry dishes, and its acidity balances mild spice.
