Formigo is a Ribeiro white from Adega Manuel Formigo in Beade, made from a field blend of local Galician grapes on granite soils. Farmed and vinified by hand at the family winery, it is a fresh, aromatic white of citrus, orchard fruit and white flowers.
Description
Formigo is made by Adega Manuel Formigo in the village of Beade, in the Galician appellation of Ribeiro. Manuel Formigo began bottling his own wine in the cellar beneath the old family house and now works from a winery built beside his four hectare Finca Teira vineyard, holding colleteiro status as a grower who vinifies only his own fruit. The blend draws on native Ribeiro varieties, led by Treixadura with Albariño, Godello, Loureira, Torrontés and a little Palomino, all grown on loose, well drained granite soils. Granite gives the wine its mineral edge and cool, well aerated root conditions, while the Atlantic influence of inland Galicia keeps the growing season fresh and the acidity high. The wine is made in a protective, reductive style to preserve aromatics, with no oak. The colour is pale lemon. The nose is fragrant and orchard led, with lemon, white peach and pear lifted by white flowers. The palate is dry, light and crisp, with a stony freshness and a clean citrus finish that reflects the granite. Serve well chilled at 9 to 10 degrees. It is an easy match for Galician seafood.
