Foradori make Sgarzon from Teroldego in the Dolomites of Trentino, farmed biodynamically and aged twelve months in clay amphorae. The result is a fresh, savoury red of red berries, plum, pepper and a stony minerality.
Description
Foradori work Teroldego, the native red grape of Trentino in the far north of Italy, and Sgarzon comes from a single site on the gravelly soils of the Campo Rotaliano below the Dolomites. The alpine setting brings cold nights and a wide diurnal range that hold acidity and fix aromatic detail, while the free draining stony soils give the grape its freshness and structure. Farming is biodynamic, and the wine is certified natural and vegan. Rather than oak, it ages twelve months in clay amphorae, vessels that allow gentle oxygen exchange to settle the tannins while adding no wood flavour, keeping the fruit clear and the texture fine. The wine is a bright, medium ruby. The nose offers red berries, plum and cherry over black pepper, rose, dried herbs and a stony, earthy note. The palate is medium bodied and savoury, with fine grained tannins, bright acidity and a long fresh finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, slightly cool, to show the fruit and freshness. It suits game, poultry and earthy dishes.
