Morei is Elisabetta Foradori’s amphora-aged Teroldego from a single Dolomite vineyard. Eight months in clay give a fresh, savoury red of red berry, cherry and a stony, herbal lift, farmed biodynamically.
Description
Morei is one of Elisabetta Foradori's single-vineyard expressions of Teroldego, the native red of the Piana Rotaliana in Trentino. The vines grow on free-draining gravel and sand at the foot of the Dolomites, where cool alpine air and a wide day-to-night temperature swing preserve perfume and acidity. The estate is biodynamic, and the wine is made naturally and suits vegans. What sets Morei apart is the cellar: it spends eight months ageing in clay amphorae rather than wood. The porous clay allows a small, steady ingress of oxygen that stabilises colour and rounds the tannins, but adds no oak flavour, so the fruit and the soil character come through unadorned. The colour is a bright ruby. The nose is fresh and savoury, with red berry, cherry and redcurrant over dried thyme, pepper and a stony, earthy edge. The palate is medium bodied, energetic and pure, with fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and a clean, mineral finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees with roast pork, poultry, grilled tuna or a mushroom dish.
