Description
Fonterenza is a small Tuscan estate run by the Padovani sisters, who planted their first vines in 1999 and farm around four hectares biodynamically. Pettirosso is their easy going natural red, mostly Sangiovese with a small portion of Ciliegiolo, made with minimal intervention and native yeasts. Sangiovese brings high acidity, sour red fruit and a savoury, faintly bitter grip, while Ciliegiolo softens the blend and adds sweeter cherry fruit and perfume. Tuscany here means warm days and cooler nights, a diurnal swing that holds acidity and keeps the wine fresh rather than heavy. Farming without herbicides or synthetic additions, and a hands off cellar approach with little or no sulphur, gives a bright, unforced style that stays low in alcohol. Colour is light ruby. The nose shows sour cherry, red currant and rhubarb with dried herbs and a touch of earth. The palate is light and juicy, with crunchy red fruit, fine tannin and a clean, savoury finish. This is a red to drink young and slightly cool. Serve at around fourteen degrees with charcuterie, roast chicken, mushroom pasta or tomato based dishes.
