Fontanafredda’s Vigna la Rosa is a single-vineyard Barolo from organically farmed Nebbiolo in Serralunga d’Alba, Piedmont. Twenty-four months in oak give a classic red of withered rose, red cherry, tar and leather.
Description
Fontanafredda farms the historic Vigna la Rosa cru in Serralunga d'Alba, in the Barolo DOCG of Piedmont. The vineyard sits on the calcareous marl soils typical of Serralunga, which give Nebbiolo firm structure, high acidity and slow-developing aromatics. Piedmont's continental climate, with warm days and cold autumn nights, lets this late-ripening variety reach full phenolic maturity while keeping its perfume and freshness. The grapes are farmed organically and the wine spends twenty-four months in oak, where extended ageing softens Nebbiolo's powerful tannins and allows the tertiary aromas of leather, tobacco and dried flowers to develop. The colour is ruby red with garnet highlights. The nose is classic Barolo, withered rose, red cherry, tar, liquorice and dried herbs. The palate is medium to full bodied, with high acidity, firm tannin and a long savoury finish marked by earth and spice. This is a wine for the cellar and the table that will reward several years more in bottle. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant well ahead. It pairs with braised beef, game, truffle dishes and aged cheeses.
