Fontanafredda makes this organic Barolo from Nebbiolo grown in Serralunga d’Alba. Aged in oak and old vats, it shows red cherry, dried rose, tobacco and the firm tannins of the Langhe.
Description
Fontanafredda is a historic estate in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, its roots in the 19th century. This Barolo comes from Serralunga d'Alba, a commune known for some of the most structured wines in the zone, where the compact, calcareous clay marls give Nebbiolo depth and firm tannin. The continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, lets this late-ripening variety build aromatics while keeping acidity. After fermentation the wine ages for around 24 months in oak barrels and a further period in old vats, where slow oxygen exchange softens Nebbiolo's powerful tannins and develops its savoury, tertiary character while organic farming keeps the fruit clear. The colour is ruby with garnet at the rim. The nose is classic Nebbiolo: red cherry, dried rose, tobacco, leather and a liquorice edge. The palate is full bodied and firm, the tannins substantial and the acidity high, with red fruit and dried herbs running to a long, savoury finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant for an hour. It calls for rich meat and aged cheese.
