Description
Cap de Barbaria makes Fomo1 on Formentera, the smallest of the Balearic Islands, from Monastrell and the local Fogoneu. Vines here grow on poor, stony soils close to the sea, under intense sun and constant salt-laden wind, conditions that produce small, concentrated berries and lend the wine its characteristic saline, sun-baked edge. Monastrell brings depth, structure and dark fruit, while Fogoneu lightens the blend and keeps the alcohol moderate at 13.5%. The wine is aged twelve months in barrel, which softens the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds a savoury, spiced complexity while the island character stays in the foreground. The colour is a deep ruby. The nose shows blackberry and dark plum, with dried Mediterranean herbs, black pepper and a salty mineral note. The palate is medium to full bodied, dry and savoury, the tannins ripe and the finish carrying herb and salt. This is a wine that speaks of its island. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, with a short decant. It suits grilled lamb and Mediterranean cooking.
