Description
Follas Novas is a single-variety Albariño made by Paco & Lola, a large cooperative winery in the D.O. Rías Baixas in Galicia. The fruit comes from vineyards across the O Salnés valley, the coolest and most maritime corner of the appellation, where Albariño is trained high on granite pergolas to lift the bunches away from the damp Atlantic ground. The soils are sandy over granite, free-draining and low in vigour, and the ocean influence brings cool nights that hold the grape's natural acidity and lend the wine its salinity. This is a young style with no oak, fermented cool in stainless steel to keep the fruit precise and the aromatics intact. The colour is pale lemon with green tints. The nose is bright and coastal, with lemon, green apple and white peach over white flowers and a touch of apricot. The palate is dry and taut, its fresh acidity framing a saline, stony finish that recalls the sea air of the region. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
