Torres make Floralis Moscatel Oro in Penedés, Catalonia, from Moscatel de Alejandría. Twelve months in tank and four in bottle give a golden wine of ripe Muscat grape, honey and candied orange, sweet but lifted by citrus freshness.
Description
Floralis Moscatel Oro is a sweet Moscatel made by Bodegas Torres in Penedés, Catalonia. Torres is a family business founded in 1870 with a long track record across Spain's wine regions. The wine is built around Moscatel de Alejandría, the large aromatic grape that gives the style its perfume. The sweetness is natural, drawn from very ripe Moscatel fruit grown in the warm Mediterranean climate of Penedés, where ample sun ripens the grapes fully while the variety's own aromatics carry through. The wine is held for twelve months in tank and a further four months in bottle before release, an approach that preserves the fresh, floral grape character rather than ageing it into a darker oxidative style. It pours a bright golden colour. The nose is unmistakably Moscatel, with ripe grape, honey, candied orange and white flowers. On the palate the sweetness is subtle rather than heavy, the residual sugar lifted by citrus freshness and a marmalade tang that keeps the finish clean. This is an approachable, aromatic golden sweet wine for the dessert course or a glass on its own. Serve well chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits fruit tarts, light citrus cakes and mild blue cheese.
