Description
Finca Río Negro Gewürztraminer is a single-variety white from the V.T. Castilla, made from Gewürztraminer, a Central European grape that has found a growing home in Spain. The fruit comes from four and a half hectares planted in 2005 and trained on a single Cordón Royat system, which controls yields and exposes the fruit evenly. The soils are limestone bedrock over a first layer of clay: the limestone lends freshness and a mineral frame, while the clay holds moisture and rounds out the mid-palate. Gewürztraminer is intensely aromatic, and the winemaking is designed to protect that. The wine is fermented and held for four months in tank, with no oak, so the focus stays on the grape's rose, lychee and spice character rather than any barrel influence. Cool handling and a short élevage keep the aromatics fresh and the wine dry to off-dry in style. Expect a bright, pale gold colour, an open nose of rose, white peach and warm ginger spice, and a full, softly textured palate with apricot, citrus peel and a honeyed note. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
