Description
Supercal comes from Zuccardi, the Argentine producer whose work at high altitude in the Uco Valley has reshaped the reputation of Mendoza Malbec. The fruit is grown in Paraje Altamira, a stretch of the valley defined by alluvial soils rich in calcium carbonate, the calcareous element that gives the wine its name. These chalky, stony soils sit at altitude, where strong sunlight and wide diurnal temperature swings between hot days and cold nights slow ripening, holding natural acidity and fixing colour and aromatic compounds in the skins. The result is a Malbec built on freshness and structure rather than weight alone. Vinification is unhurried and the wine ages in oak, where slow oxygen exchange through the barrel softens the tannins and adds a fine, savoury frame without dominating the fruit. The colour is deep violet. The nose carries ripe plum and black cherry over crushed stone, dried herbs and a touch of black pepper. The palate is concentrated but lifted, with firm chalky tannins and a long mineral finish that reflects the limestone. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting an hour ahead, alongside grilled red meat or a herb crusted rack of lamb.
