Finca Parera, led by Jordi Parera, makes this biodynamic Penedès blend of Xarel·lo, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer from vineyards at around 235 metres in Alt Penedès. Hand-harvested and young, it is aromatic and floral, with white flowers, rose, white peach and citrus.
Description
Finca Parera is a biodynamic estate in the D.O. Penedès in Catalonia, run by Jordi Parera, a grower with more than forty-five years of experience. This white blends Xarel·lo, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer from vineyards at Sant Llorenc d'Hortons, in Alt Penedès at around 235 metres above sea level. That altitude matters: cooler air and a wide day-to-night temperature swing preserve acidity and lock in aromatics, which suits the perfumed Gewurztraminer in the blend. The grapes are hand-harvested into small ten-kilogram boxes to keep the fruit intact and avoid oxidation before pressing. The three grapes each play a part: Gewurztraminer brings floral, rose-scented perfume, Chardonnay adds body and stone fruit, and Xarel·lo gives structure and a savoury backbone. The wine is young and unoaked, so the emphasis stays on primary aroma. The colour is pale straw. The nose is lifted and floral, with white flowers, rose and elderflower over white peach and pear. The palate is dry and gently textured, the aromatic fruit balanced by fresh acidity, finishing clean with a lightly citrus edge. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees.
