Description
Finca Olivardots Vermell is an organic red from Vinyes d'Olivardots in the D.O. Empordà, in northern Catalonia. It blends Syrah, which makes up the majority, with Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and old-vine Cariñena. Most of the vines are young, between 10 and 15 years old, with the older Cariñena adding depth. They grow in the flattest part of the region on alluvial soils of cobbles, sand and granite, free-draining ground that limits vigour, while the warm Mediterranean climate and the drying Tramuntana wind keep the fruit healthy and concentrate the flavours. The grapes are picked by hand. After fermentation the wine ages ten months in French oak, a moderate ageing that rounds the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds gentle spice while keeping the fruit ripe and forward, with malolactic fermentation broadening the texture. The wine is deep ruby. The nose shows ripe plum and red berry fruit, black pepper and wild Mediterranean herbs over liquorice and a stony earthiness. The palate is full and warming, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees with grilled meats or a hearty stew.
