Description
Vinyes d'Olivardots is the project of Carme Casacuberta and her daughter Carlota Pena in Capmany, in the Alt Emporda of northern Catalonia, where they farm organically and work to revive near-forgotten local varieties. This rosé is made from Carinena, the region's deeply rooted old-vine grape. Emporda lies at the foot of the Pyrenees and is defined by the Tramuntana wind, which dries the vines and keeps the fruit clean, while the granite and slate soils give drainage and a mineral, saline edge. The Rosa d'Amfora spends four months in clay amphorae rather than steel or oak. Clay allows a slow, gentle micro-oxygenation through the porous walls without adding oak flavour, building texture and a savoury depth while keeping the fruit fresh. Expect a pale, light salmon colour and a complex nose of grapefruit, blood orange and rose petal with white peach and a herbal lift. The palate is dry and textured, the amphora giving a fine grip and a long saline finish that suits the coastal, windswept site. Serve chilled at 9 to 11 degrees.
