Description
Finca Montico is a single variety Verdejo from the DO Rueda, made by Marqués de Riscal from vines over 20 years old on the highest peaks above the río Duero in Castilla y León. Altitude is central to the style, since the wide gap between hot days and cold nights slows ripening and locks in the acidity and aromatic freshness for which Rueda Verdejo is known. The stony, poor soils keep yields modest. Grapes are hand harvested, chilled on arrival and lightly pressed without destemming to protect the juice. Fermentation runs on indigenous yeast, giving a wine that reflects its own vineyard character, after which it rests on its fine lees to add texture and a subtle savoury depth while keeping the fruit crisp. The result is pale straw with a nose of lemon, green apple and cut herbs, along with a touch of fennel typical of the grape. The palate is dry and taut, with bright acidity, a lightly creamy mid palate from the lees and a stony, faintly bitter finish that is a Verdejo hallmark. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees.
