Finca Moncloa revives Tintilla de Rota, an old Cádiz grape, in this sweet fortified red. Deep currant in colour, it shows very ripe red fruit, plum and a hint of violet over a warming, chocolate-edged palate.
Description
Finca Moncloa Tintilla de Rota Dulce is a sweet fortified red from the Cádiz estate of the González family, made to revive an almost forgotten local tradition. Tintilla de Rota is an indigenous Andalusian red grape that once covered the land around the village of Rota and was historically used for sweet wines. The vineyards lie in the warm Cádiz countryside, where strong sun and a long growing season ripen the fruit fully and concentrate its sugar and colour. The wine is fortified to hold natural sweetness and aged 12 months in oak barrels, where measured contact with air softens the tannins and adds spice, cocoa and a savoury edge to the ripe fruit. The colour is deep currant, almost opaque, with reflections of ripe cherry and a hint of violet. The nose leads with very ripe red and dark fruit, and the palate is sweet, warming and full, carrying plum, prune and a dark-chocolate depth balanced by fresh acidity. Serve lightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees in a small glass, with dessert or strong cheese.
