From Bodegas Luzon in Jumilla, Murcia, this organic, sulphite-free Monastrell is unoaked and made for early drinking. Pure and juicy, it shows ripe cherry, raspberry, fig and a peppery, warm-climate depth.
Description
Finca Luzon Sin Sulfitos is made by Bodegas Luzon in Jumilla, in Murcia, south east Spain, from the local Monastrell grape. The wine is organic and made without added sulphites, so the cellar work is gentle and the aim is to show the fruit as cleanly as possible. Jumilla is hot and dry, with poor, limestone rich soils and low rainfall that keep yields naturally small and concentrate the grapes. Monastrell, also known as Mourvedre, thrives in this heat, ripening fully to give deep colour, ripe dark fruit and a warming 14.5 per cent. The wine is unoaked and bottled young, so it keeps the bright, primary character of the grape rather than wood spice. The colour is deep, dark cherry. The nose is intense, with ripe cherry, raspberry, plum, a hint of dried fig, black pepper and a stony earthiness. The palate is full and fruit driven, with ripe, supple tannin, soft acidity and a generous, peppery finish. This is a warm, juicy red for everyday meals. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits grilled red meat, stews and spiced dishes.
