Description
Finca Luzón Monastrell-Syrah is a young red from the Luzón winery in D.O. Jumilla, in the Murcia region of south-eastern Spain, blending Monastrell, the area's signature grape, with Syrah. The grapes come from the estate's extensive vineyards in a hot, arid continental climate, where intense sun and poor, free draining limestone soils stress the vines and ripen the thick skinned Monastrell fully, giving deep colour, ripe fruit and the warmth that brings this wine to 14.5 percent. After a fermentation of six to eight days at a controlled 24 to 26C, the wine undergoes a short maceration of two to four days on the skins, which extracts colour, tannin and the dark fruit phenolics that define the style without over extracting. Made without significant oak ageing, the focus stays on fresh, primary fruit. The result is a full bodied, ripe red with dark plum, blackberry and black cherry, a peppery, herbal edge from the Syrah and the warm, garrigue character of Monastrell, on supple tannins and a generous finish. Serve at 16 to 17C. It suits grilled meat, lamb and spiced dishes.
