Goyo García makes this natural Ribera del Duero red from 55 year old Tempranillo vines at 900 metres in Villanueva de Gumiel. Three months on the skins give it fragrant violet and red berry fruit with a fresh, mineral, peppery edge.
Description
Goyo García Viticultor works in D.O. Ribera del Duero, in Castilla y León, making natural wines with minimal intervention. Finca Los Quemados is a single variety Tinta del País, the local Tempranillo, from vines around 55 years old in the village of Villanueva de Gumiel, near Burgos. The site sits high, at 900 metres above sea level, on red sand soils scattered with boulders. That altitude brings cold nights and a wide diurnal range, which slows ripening and preserves the bright acidity and floral aromatics that set this wine apart from richer, oakier Ribera styles. The old vines crop little, concentrating flavour, while the sandy soils give a lighter, more perfumed expression. The clusters are destemmed and macerated on their skins for around three months, a long contact that draws out colour, gentle tannin and savoury phenolics, with fermentation by native yeasts. It is medium ruby, with a fragrant nose of violet, red cherry and raspberry over peppery, earthy and liquorice notes. The palate is medium bodied and fresh, with red fruit, fine, dusty tannin and a mineral, savoury finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It suits roast lamb and grilled red meat.
