Vinos Sanz, the oldest winery in Rueda, makes this young Verdejo from vineyards near the Duero at La Seca. It is vibrant and unoaked, with intense green apple and melon, a citrus lift and the grape’s typical herbal edge.
Description
Vinos Sanz, founded in 1870, is the oldest winery in the D.O. Rueda, based at La Seca in Valladolid near the Duero river. This is a young, unoaked Verdejo made in a fresh, fruit-driven style. Rueda sits high on the Castilian plateau, where a harsh continental climate of hot days and cold nights over stony, free-draining soils lets Verdejo ripen while holding on to its sharp acidity and aromatic character. The wide day-to-night temperature swing is central to that freshness. The grapes are fermented cool in stainless steel, a method chosen to lock in the primary fruit and the grape's natural aromatics, with no oak or lees ageing to weigh it down. The colour is pale straw with green tints. The nose is bright and intense, with green apple and melon to the fore, a clear citrus lift and Verdejo's signature herbal, faintly fennel-like note. The palate is crisp, light and dry, the acidity clean and lively, finishing with the characteristic slightly bitter citrus-peel twist that marks good Verdejo. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and with light fish, shellfish and salads.
