Finca de la Rica makes El Nómada in Rioja from Tempranillo and Graciano grown on 60-year-old bush vines at 610 metres. Fifteen months in French oak give it ripe black fruit, fresh acidity and a savoury, herbal lift.
Description
Finca de la Rica produces El Nómada in the D.O.Ca. Rioja from a blend of Tempranillo and Graciano. The fruit comes from south-facing plots at 610 metres on clay-limestone soils over clay subsoil, planted to bush vines that average around sixty years of age. The high, calcareous site gives a marked day-to-night temperature swing that slows ripening and locks in acidity and aromatic detail, while the old low-yielding vines concentrate the fruit and the Graciano adds colour, freshness and a peppery, herbal note. The grapes are destemmed, with a quarter left as whole berries, which adds lift and a fresher fruit character to the fermentation. The wine is then aged for fifteen months in French oak barrels, where gentle oxidation through the wood knits the tannins together and adds spice and a fine toast. It is deep ruby, with ripe dark berry and plum on the nose, framed by floral notes, liquorice and dried herbs over a backbone of sweet oak. The palate is fresh and structured, with ripe tannins and a long savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with grilled lamb, roast beef or mushroom dishes.
