From the El Vilosell hills of Costers del Segre, Tomas Cusine grows Garnacha, Cabernet and Syrah on calcareous, gravelly soils at over 700 metres. Eighteen months in French oak lend structure to ripe black fruit, liquorice and a fresh, mineral lift drawn from the altitude.
Description
Finca Comabarra is a red wine produced by Tomas Cusine in El Vilosell, within D.O. Costers del Segre. Cusine began the project in 2003 on a 30-hectare property on the northern face of La Llena, the last range of El Montsant, with vineyards sitting between 700 and 740 metres. The soils are calcareous, with varying amounts of gravel over a clay and clay-loam structure that drains well and holds freshness, while the altitude widens the day-to-night temperature range and keeps acidity firm. The blend of Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah is farmed sustainably and aged 18 months in French oak, where gentle oxygen exchange builds structure and adds cedar and a fine grain of spice. Expect a deep, dense red with blackberry, plum and cassis, liquorice and a stony, mineral lift from the high calcareous site. The palate is full bodied and structured, with ripe black fruit, firm tannin and a fresh line of acidity that keeps it balanced through a long finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, ideally decanted. It suits roast lamb, grilled red meat and mature hard cheese.
