Mustiguillo makes Finca Calvestra from the native Merseguera grape at Utiel in Valencia, in the Vino de Pago El Terrerazo. Aged eleven months in oak, it is a textured Mediterranean white of ripe peach, citrus peel and a fresh, herbal, mineral edge.
Description
Finca Calvestra comes from Bodega Mustiguillo at Utiel, inland from Valencia, within the single-estate Vino de Pago El Terrerazo, a classification the site earned in 2010 for its distinctive character. The wine is made from Merseguera, a native Mediterranean white, grown on high ground where limestone-rich soils and altitude are decisive. The elevation brings cool nights that offset the warm Valencian days, slowing ripening and preserving the natural acidity and the delicate aromatics of a variety that can otherwise be neutral. After a gentle pressing the wine is aged for eleven months in oak barrels. The extended contact with the fine lees builds texture and a subtle savoury depth on the mid-palate, while the oak works mainly to round the wine and add breadth rather than strong wood flavour. The colour is pale gold. The nose shows ripe white peach, citrus peel and pear with white flowers, dried herbs and a light almond note. The palate is medium-bodied and textured, the fruit balanced by fresh acidity and a saline, mineral finish that reflects the limestone soils. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It suits white fish, seafood and roast chicken.
