Fil-loxera is a small organic garage winery in Fontanars dels Alforins, in the Valencian uplands. This lees-aged white blends Macabeo, Malvasia and white-pressed Monastrell, giving white peach, green apple and citrus with a fresh, mineral finish.
Description
Fil-loxera and Cia is a young, small winery founded in 2011 by Pilar Esteve, Jose Domenech and Joan Llobell at Fontanars dels Alforins, in the cooler uplands of inland Valencia. It began as a genuine garage project, working micro-plots the family owns, and the wines are farmed organically and made in small quantities. This white blends Macabeo for its bright, neutral base, aromatic Malvasia for perfume, and Monastrell pressed off pale as a white to add a little grip and structure. The vineyards sit at altitude, where cooler nights preserve acidity and aromatics through the warm Mediterranean days. The wine is rested on its lees, which fills out the texture and adds a savoury depth while keeping the style fresh and direct. It is pale straw in the glass, with a nose of white peach, green apple and citrus peel lifted by white flowers. The palate is dry and lively, the orchard fruit carried on a clean, mineral line to a fresh finish, with a subtle textural weight from the lees. Serve well chilled, around 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and suits grilled white fish, shellfish, salads and fresh cheeses.
