Figuiere makes this organic Provence rosé from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Grenache. Pale and direct-pressed in the classic Cotes de Provence style, it shows strawberry, white peach and citrus with a dry, saline finish.
Description
Figuiere Mediterranee comes from the Figuiere estate in Provence, founded by Alain Combard, who moved south from Chablis in 1992 to make rosé in the Cotes de Provence. The blend draws on Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Grenache, the established varieties of the region, farmed organically. Provence is the spiritual home of dry pale rosé, and the climate explains why: long, warm, sunny days are tempered by the Mistral wind and the moderating Mediterranean, which keeps the vineyards dry and healthy and locks in acidity. The poor schist and limestone soils keep yields modest and the fruit clean. The style is built in the cellar through early picking and gentle direct pressing, with only the briefest skin contact, so the wine takes a pale colour and a fresh, delicate character rather than weight. Cool fermentation preserves the aromatics. The colour is a pale, light salmon pink. The nose shows strawberry, white peach and citrus with white flowers and a herbal note. The palate is dry, crisp and saline, with a clean, refreshing finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10C. It suits salads, shellfish and grilled fish, or works on its own as an aperitif.
