Feudi di San Gregorio makes this Rubrato from Aglianico grown in volcanic Irpinia, in Campania’s Apennine hills. Held ten months in stainless steel and a further six in bottle, it shows bright purplish red fruit, plum and a savoury, peppery grip.
Description
Feudi di San Gregorio is one of the leading producers of Irpinia, in the Campanian Apennines of southern Italy, and Rubrato is its accessible take on Aglianico. The grape thrives on the area's volcanic and clay soils, where high altitude and wide diurnal temperature swings keep acidity firm and slow ripening, so the fruit holds its freshness even as tannins develop. This bottling sees no oak: ten months in stainless steel preserves primary fruit and the grape's natural structure, while six months in bottle softens the firm Aglianico tannin before release. The result is bright purplish red in the glass, with aromas of cherry, plum and red berries lifted by black pepper, dried herbs and a clear volcanic earthiness. The palate is medium to full bodied, with fresh acidity, a savoury core of liquorice and tobacco, and the grippy tannin that marks the variety. The finish is dry and mineral. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, ideally decanted for half an hour, in a large bowled glass. It is built for the table and suits grilled and roasted red meats.
