Description
Feudi di San Gregorio Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco is a white from Campania, blending the local Coda di Volpe and Falanghina grapes grown on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Feudi di San Gregorio, founded in 1986 in Irpinia, has been central to the revival of Campania's native varieties. The vines here grow on volcanic soils, dark, free-draining ash and mineral-rich lava sands that were never affected by phylloxera and that give the wine a smoky, saline, stony character. The proximity to the Bay of Naples and the altitude of the slopes bring cooling influence and a wide day-to-night temperature range, which preserves acidity and aromatic freshness. The wine is fermented and held in stainless steel for three months, a method that adds no oak and keeps the fruit clean, bright and primary. The fruit is farmed sustainably. It pours a pale yellow and opens with white peach, lemon and green apple lifted by white flowers and a light herbal note. The palate is dry and fresh, with a firm citrus line and a smoky, mineral, saline finish drawn from the volcanic soils. Serve well chilled at 9 to 11 degrees.
