Feudi di San Gregorio makes this Greco di Tufo in Campania, southern Italy, from Greco grown on the volcanic tufo soils of Irpinia. Fermented in steel and rested on its lees, it is mineral and dry, with white peach, citrus, almond and a smoky, saline finish.
Description
Greco di Tufo is a white from Feudi di San Gregorio, the Campanian estate founded in the Irpinia hills of southern Italy after the 1980 earthquake. It is made from Greco, an ancient grape grown around the town of Tufo, whose name comes from the volcanic tuff and sulphur-rich soils that define the DOCG. These mineral soils, combined with vineyards set high in the inland Apennines, give a wine of firm acidity, real structure and a distinct smoky, saline character. The elevation brings cool nights that preserve freshness and aromatic definition in a southern climate. The wine is fermented in stainless steel to keep the fruit clean, then rested on its fine lees, which adds a rounder texture and a light savoury depth through the release of mannoproteins. It shows a bright straw-gold colour, with white peach, pear and lemon on the nose over almond, white flowers and a flinty, smoky note from the volcanic ground. The palate is dry and full-bodied, with a firm acidity, a nutty depth and a long, saline, mineral finish. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees. It is a fine match for seafood and richer fish, and has the structure for lighter poultry.
