Description
Feudi di San Gregorio makes this Fiano di Avellino in Campania, southern Italy, from vineyards spread across the hills around Avellino at 400 to 700 metres, on soils that mix volcanic material with clay. Altitude keeps the nights cold and the growing season long, holding acidity in the grapes, while the volcanic soils give the wine its mineral drive. Fiano is a textured, slow-ripening variety capable of ageing, and even young it carries a subtle nutty character alongside its orchard fruit. The wine is fermented and aged on its lees in stainless steel, which keeps the fruit fresh and primary while the lees contact adds a rounder mid-palate through released mannoproteins. Farming is sustainable. The colour is pale straw with green tints. The nose is fresh and defined, with pear and green apple over citrus, white flowers and a light hazelnut note. The palate is dry and mineral, with firm acidity and a fine texture carrying through to a long, faintly nutty finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white glass. It suits shellfish, grilled white fish and vegetable dishes.
