Feudi di San Gregorio grows Falanghina on the volcanic slopes of the Sannio in Campania. Held five months on its lees in stainless steel, this dry white is fresh and saline, with lemon, green apple and white flowers over a stony core.
Description
Feudi di San Gregorio is one of Campania's leading estates, and this wine comes from the DOC Falanghina del Sannio, in the hills of the Benevento province in southern Italy. Falanghina is an old local grape, grown here on volcanic and limestone soils that give the wine its mineral, saline backbone; the elevation of the Sannio hills and the cooling influence of the mountains keep nights cool, which protects acidity and aromatic freshness. The wine is fermented and held in stainless steel and left on its lees for around five months. Ageing on the lees, without oak, feeds a slow release of compounds from the spent yeast that broadens the mid-palate and adds a subtle savoury depth while keeping the fruit clean and the colour pale. It shows a pale straw yellow. The nose is fresh and floral, with lemon, green apple and pear over white flowers and a chalky, stony note. The palate is dry and crisp, with lively acidity and a salty, citrus-peel finish. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees. It is a natural partner for shellfish, fried fish and vegetable antipasti.
