Feudi di San Gregorio makes Aglianico dal Re from Aglianico grown across its Irpinia plots in Campania. A short six months in French oak keep it fresh and savoury, with red cherry, plum and a peppery, earthy edge.
Description
Feudi di San Gregorio is one of the leading wineries of southern Italy, farming around 700 plots across 300 hectares from its base at Sorbo Serpico in the province of Avellino. This Irpinia Aglianico, named dal Re, is the more approachable expression of the estate's signature grape. Aglianico ripens late and carries high acidity and tannin by nature, and the volcanic soils of these inland Campanian hills, together with cool nights, preserve the freshness that defines the variety. The ageing here is deliberately restrained, six months in French oak barrels and six in bottle, so the oak frames the fruit without dominating it and the wine keeps its bright, savoury character. The colour is a clear ruby. The nose leads with red cherry, raspberry and plum over dried herbs and a touch of black pepper. The palate is medium to full bodied, with fresh acidity, fine grained tannins and an earthy, savoury finish typical of the grape. Serve at 16 degrees. It pairs well with grilled and roast red meats, tomato based pasta and lasagne, and medium aged cheeses.
