Description
The bottler Brothers in Malt bottled this Fettercairn, an 18 year old, distilled in 2006, from cask 107732, bottled at 53.2%, one of 162 bottles. Fettercairn is a Highland single malt from the foot of the Cairngorms in Aberdeenshire, known for its tropical fruit style. Its stills carry unique cooling rings, copper tubes that drench them in cold mountain water.
The spirit was made on mountain water with the stills drenched in cold water, building the tropical Fettercairn style. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a touch of coconut from the lactones. At oxidative maturity vanillin and lactones are fully expressed, the fruit deepening over a soft spice. American oak suits the tropical make, lending vanilla and coconut over the fruit. Years in oak round the spirit, the pineapple and citrus deepening to a mango. The cooling rings give a light spirit, so the cask brings depth over the years.
At a hearty 53.2% it carries real weight. Tropical fruit, vanilla and a soft spice, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run pineapple, citrus and a soft vanilla. The finish runs long, tropical and warming. This is a tropical Highland malt from the foot of the mountains.
