Description
From the bottler Ian Macleod, an 18 year old Fettercairn, distilled in 1996, from cask 91132, bottled at 46%, one of 682 bottles. Fettercairn is a fruity Highland malt made on mountain water under the Grampian foothills. After Ramsay lost his fortune, the Fasque estate passed to the Gladstone family in 1829.
The spirit was run through the water cooled stills for a light, tropical make, for a clean make of pineapple and citrus. Finished in an Oloroso cask, the wood building over the fruity, light spirit. Into oxidative maturity, slow air ingress builds fruity ethyl esters (pineapple and pear) and a honeyed depth. Refill oak lets the light, tropical Fettercairn character lead the way. A gentle maturation suits the light make, the tropical fruit growing richer with time. Its stills carry unique cooling rings, copper tubes that drench them in cold mountain water.
At an approachable 46% it is light and tropical. A bright, tropical orchard fruit, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. A baked pineapple and a gentle spice lift it. It finishes long, fruity and clean. This is the cooling ring malt of the Mearns.
