Description
The bottler Hart Brothers bottled this Fettercairn, a 15 year old, distilled in 2007, bottled at 55.9%. Fettercairn, founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay, is one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries. After Ramsay lost his fortune, the Fasque estate passed to the Gladstone family in 1829.
The spirit was distilled from unpeated malt in stills cooled by their copper rings, the cooling rings lifting a clean, tropical character. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the American oak letting the fruit lead. Through oxidative maturity esters concentrate, the tropical fruit turning honeyed and a roasted coffee creeping in. Refill oak lets the light, tropical Fettercairn character lead the way. It uses unpeated malt and matures mostly in American oak ex-Bourbon casks. The cool Highland air of the Mearns gives a slow, even maturation in the dunnage warehouses.
Bottled at a cask strength 55.9%, it is rich. A light, tropical sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A baked pineapple and a gentle spice lift it. The close is light and warming, fruit over a gentle oak. This is Fettercairn, one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries.
