Description
From the bottler Kirsch Import, a 14 year old Fettercairn, distilled in 2009, from cask KI-0013, bottled at 52%. Fettercairn is a light, tropical Highland malt distilled in the Howe of the Mearns since 1824. After Ramsay lost his fortune, the Fasque estate passed to the Gladstone family in 1829.
The spirit was drawn off the stills, the cooling rings raising reflux for a fruity spirit, for a light, fruit driven spirit. A bourbon barrel held it, the wood adding a light vanilla to the fruit. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper pineapple and pear. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the light Highland spirit. The light, fruity make takes cask flavour well while keeping its pineapple and citrus. It uses unpeated malt and matures mostly in American oak ex-Bourbon casks.
At 52%, undiluted, it is deep and tropical. Pineapple, mango and a gentle honey, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is fruity and tropical, the light spirit shining through. The finish runs long, tropical and warming. This is Fettercairn, one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries.
