Description
From the bottler The Whisky Chamber, a 10 year old Fettercairn, distilled in 2006, from cask 107659, bottled at 55.2%. Fettercairn is a fruity Highland malt made on mountain water under the Grampian foothills. It was founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay, who turned a corn mill at Nethermill into a distillery.
The spirit was drawn off the stills, the cooling rings raising reflux for a fruity spirit, for the tropical, fruity make Fettercairn is known for. A bourbon barrel held it, the wood adding a light vanilla to the fruit. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper pineapple and pear. The water cooled stills give a light spirit that ages with grace. The cool Highland air of the Mearns gives a slow, even maturation in the dunnage warehouses. A gentle maturation suits the light make, the tropical fruit growing richer with time.
At cask strength 55.2% it is full bodied. Pineapple, pear and a creamy vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run pineapple, citrus and a soft vanilla. A clean finish ends on pineapple and a soft oak. This is a tropical Highland malt from the foot of the mountains.
