Description
A 10 year old Fettercairn from the Campbeltown house Cadenhead, distilled in 1993, bottled at 60.7%, one of 300 bottles. Fettercairn is a light, tropical Highland malt distilled in the Howe of the Mearns since 1824. The cooling rings raise reflux and copper contact, so only the lightest vapours rise, for a tropical spirit.
Run through the water cooled stills for a light, tropical make, for a clean make of pineapple and citrus. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, a soft vanilla beneath the tropical fruit. Integration folds eugenol (clove) and vanillin (vanilla) into the fruit, the body softer and fuller. Years in oak round the spirit, the pineapple and citrus deepening to a mango. It has been owned by Whyte and Mackay since 1973. It uses unpeated malt and matures mostly in American oak ex-Bourbon casks. Its water comes from springs in the Grampian and Cairngorm mountains above the distillery.
Bottled at a cask strength 60.7%, it is rich. A light, tropical sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The texture is light and clean, the fruit lifted by vanilla. The finish runs long, tropical and warming. This is Fettercairn, one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries.
