Ferrer Bobet Vinyes Velles is a Priorat red from century-old Carinena and Garnacha vines on steep llicorella slopes. Fifteen months in French oak give this powerful wine dark cherry, crushed herbs and a slate-driven minerality.
Description
Ferrer Bobet Vinyes Velles is a red from D.O.Q. Priorat in Catalonia, made by Bodega Ferrer Bobet from Carinena and Garnacha. The grapes come from century-old vines planted on the steep terraces known as costers, in one of the highest and coolest parts of the appellation. The soil is the licorella typical of Priorat, a fractured slate and quartzite that forces the roots deep for water and gives the wine its mineral signature. The altitude and cool nights extend ripening, so the old, low-yielding vines reach full maturity while keeping freshness. The wine is aged fifteen months in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange resolves the firm tannins and adds spice and a fine toast without burying the fruit or the soil. The colour is deep cherry red. The nose shows ripe black cherry and plum over crushed Mediterranean herbs, black pepper, liquorice and a clear note of crushed slate. The palate is full bodied and structured, with firm ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a long mineral finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanting an hour ahead. It suits grilled and roast red meats and game.
