Feller Rumreich Cognac Cask

Rumreich is Feller's aged rum line, this expression an eight year old finished in a cognac cask and bottled at 45%. Feller is a German distillery and bottler, and the cognac finish places this among the growing number of central European rums that borrow from the brandy world to add a layer of fruit and oak.

The cognac cask is the dominant voice, the nose showing wood and vanilla with dried fruit and a slightly soapy note, then a palate where the cognac barrel reads clearly, with vanilla, a soft sweetness and a sense of dilution at the edges. The finish is short, sweet and woody. With no confirmed sweetening, the softness here seems to come from the cask and the modest strength rather than added sugar. It is competently made and the brandy influence is unmistakable, very much a rum for drinkers who enjoy the cognac finished style, where the barrel leads more than the spirit.
