Description
Azpilicueta is a well-known Rioja house, and this Crianza is a younger, fruit-forward blend of Tempranillo with Graciano and Mazuelo from La Rioja in northern Spain. The region's continental climate, softened by Atlantic and Mediterranean air, gives a long ripening season that balances ripe fruit with the bright acidity that defines Rioja, while the clay and limestone soils support Tempranillo's structure. Tempranillo carries the red fruit and body, Graciano lends acidity and aromatic lift, and Mazuelo adds tannin and freshness. The wine is aged twelve months in oak barrels, where moderate oxygen exchange and malolactic conversion soften the tannins and add gentle vanilla and spice without masking the fruit, then rested six months in bottle before release to settle the wine. This shorter ageing keeps the Crianza fresher and more immediate than a Reserva. The colour is bright ruby. The nose leads with red berries, cherry and plum, with a light vanilla and cedar lift from the oak. The palate is medium bodied, smooth and juicy, with soft tannins, fresh acidity and a clean finish. Serve at 16 degrees with roast and grilled meats.
