Iago Garrido makes this biodynamic Ribeiro red from native Atlantic grapes Brancellao, Caíño Longo, Espadeiro and Sousón. Ten months in barrel give a light, fresh red of red berries, pepper and a clear Galician minerality.
Description
Fazenda Agrícola Augalevada is Iago Garrido's biodynamic project in D.O. Ribeiro, Galicia, in green, Atlantic-facing north-west Spain. Ollos Tinto is a field blend of indigenous local grapes, Brancellao, Caíño Longo, Espadeiro and Sousón, varieties built for this cool, damp, maritime climate. The granite and slate soils and the steady ocean influence keep alcohol low, here just 12%, and preserve the bright acidity and aromatic lift that define Atlantic reds. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, with no synthetic inputs, and the wine spends ten months in barrel, where gentle oxygen exchange softens its naturally firm structure while leaving the fruit and freshness intact. The wine is bright, light ruby. The nose offers red cherry, redcurrant and wild berries with black pepper, dried herbs and a floral, earthy edge. The palate is light and fresh, with crisp acidity, fine grainy tannins and a stony, savoury finish. Serve cool, at 14 to 16 degrees. It pairs well with roast chicken, oily fish and mushroom dishes.
