Fazenda Agrícola Augalevada makes this biodynamic Ribeiro red from native Galician grapes Brancellao and Caíño. Aged ten months in barrel, it is light and fluid at 11 percent, with fresh forest fruit, pepper and a stony, Atlantic freshness.
Description
Fazenda Agrícola Augalevada, the Galician winery of Liliana Fernández and Iago Garrido, grew from the local furancho tradition and farms biodynamically in D.O. Ribeiro. Ollos de Maia is made from native red grapes Brancellao, Caíño Longo and Caíño da Terra, varieties suited to inland Galicia's cool, rainy Atlantic climate and granite soils, which produce reds of low alcohol, high acidity and aromatic detail rather than power. At 11 percent this is a deliberately light, fluid red, aged ten months in barrel to add a little texture and savoury depth while keeping the fruit fresh through gentle, low intervention handling and native yeast fermentation. The wine is pale to medium ruby, with aromas of forest fruit, red cherry and redcurrant over pepper, dried herbs and a wet stone minerality. The palate is light bodied and lively, with fine, low tannin, bright acidity and a clean, mineral finish that mirrors the granite terroir and damp climate. It is an easy, versatile red for everyday drinking. Serve cool at 13 to 15 degrees. It is best with lighter dishes.
